Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Repairs and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment, such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines and equipment
? Reads job order; observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble
? Disassembles, overhauls, repairs, rebuilds, adjusts, or replaces parts...
? Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts
? Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections
? Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements
? Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments
? Repairs or replaces defective parts. Installs special functional and structural parts in devices Lubricates and cleans parts
? Starts devices to test their performance
? Mends damaged body parts by hammering out or filling in dents and bodywork, including painting
? Examines protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices and makes adjustments.
? Initiates purchase order for parts and machines
? Fabricates special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other devices according to blueprints or schematic drawings
? Heavy work, lifting/moving up to 100 pounds
? Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis
? Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis
? Work outside in all weather conditions and on occasion at elevated heights; may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration
? Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection
? Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
? Wear protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses
? Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work
? Complete annual training and pass safety and track worker rules examinations
? Must successfully complete probationary period
? This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement, membership is required
? 75% travel required
? High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
? Class B CDL required
? Must have a valid driver?s license
? Must be a qualified welder
? Outside work experience
? Welding experience
? Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications--both general and technical)
? Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
? Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)
? Basic Math
? Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
? May require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
? Must pass all required assessments
? Must pass a background screening
? May require a medical examination, including drug and physical capabilities test
